I’M A SUCKER FOR SPARKLE VIDEO DAY!

Whenever a song starts out with, “Alright you freaks..”, you know it’s going to be extra good just like today’s Sparkle Video.  Don Cornelius (RIP) is showcasing a full-on outfit war on the Soul Train stage and to be honest, I’m not sure who the winner is.  Now normally, I always “go sequin” as did the legendary Teena Marie (RIP) in an exciting magenta sequin dazzler which she smartly paired with a turquoise sequin tube top and matching boots.  However, she’s standing next to the one and only Rick James (RIP) who’s wearing a very “Bootsy-esque” suit with extreme bell cuffs, accented with rhinestones and fabulously topped off with jeweled encrusted glasses and glitter dusted hair.  This makes for quite a conundrum so instead, let’s call it a glittering tie because when it comes to sparkling, everyone’s a winner!

The MOTHERLOAD

The word for today is “motherload” because that’s exactly what today’s Sparkle Video is.  “Dancing Queen” features the ladies of ABBA in the outfits: slinky sequin catsuits with matching neckties(?) and boots.  Their disco ball-esque set is so effective at drawing you in to the mood as swirling dancers move all around them like a dream.  At approximately 2:56, the “light-up dance floor” on the stage kicks in for a dazzling grand finale and then to top it off..it’s a karaoke video!  All this is just too much Soldiers, and when I say “too much” I mean perfect.  The motherload.

CAN’T TAKE MY EYES OFF of SPARKLE VIDEO DAY!

For your pleasure on Sparkle Video Day, I have chosen to feature two videos of the same song by the same group because I honestly couldn’t decide which was more splendid.

Video A shows the Boys Town Gang performing their hit “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”  in a standard “lip-sync-to-track” moment but looking marvelous nonetheless.  The male backup “dancers” (something makes me think they’re not really dancers) are rocking their best matching leather daddy looks and Jackson Moore’s dress screams early 80’s disco fashion in the most fabulous way.  Batwing sleeves, down-turned metallic belt and draping made to move with her body as she slinks around on stage is purely top drawer!

Video B features an appearance on Top of the Pops where they’re singing live and feeling it!   In this version, the backup “dancers” are also backup singers and while they’re covered a bit more they still make sure to have guns fully exposed in matching electric red low-slung tanks.   As for the lovely Ms. Moore, all I can say is “eat your heart out American Apparel!”.  She is working full length black satin explosion like the Johnny Cash of Disco and I’m loving it!

“NO BULL” SPARKLE VIDEO DAY!

Today’s Sparkle Video has several things that are near and dear to my heart: disco balls, animals, hot guys and sexified dancing.  Most of all, it features the ultra-fabulous Charo who has taken up the cause to ban bullfighting in her home country of Spain and here in “Dance, Don’t Bullfight”, she pleads her case extremely well.  I’m sure when given the choice, most people would choose boner grinding bedazzled beauties on the dance floor over watching an animal be tormented and killed – but that’s just my opinion as a professional veterinarian. However one look at Manolo, Charo’s adorable pet bull who also stars in this video, and I think you’ll agree that this cruel “sport” has got to go!  I will miss those tight toreador pants tho’… Cuchi Cuchi!

THE ART OF SPARKLE VIDEO DAY

I’m sorry to bring it up again, but today’s Sparkle Video has me longing for the days when men dressed for the art of seductionTom Jones has enjoyed a long career as a sex symbol and it’s not due to some form of wizardry or amazing talent.  He owes it all to his swagger, confidence and well chosen outfits that allowed his millions of lust-filled fans to visualize him naked.  In fact, I’m willing to bet that no one ever asked “How’s it hangin’ Tom?”, because he always made it quite clear and that’s exactly the kind of men we need today.  No more shirts buttoned all the way up, no more knit hats and beards that hide “come hither” facial expressions and certainly no more of this attitude that the company of a lovely sequined lady is something that comes with no effort whatsoever.  Which brings me to the other bet I’m willing to make and that’s after this show, Tom was back in his dressing room in a sparkling huddle with all of his gorgeous dancers and their equally fabulous hair-  and I’m pretty sure I’d win.

LASERTASTIC SPARKLE VIDEO DAY!

Today’s Sparkle Video features Perfume, a trio of super kawaii Japanese girls in brightly colored disco pants, who are laser addicts.  Seriously, I’ve watched a bunch of their videos and they always have lots of lasers so I’m guessing it’s in their show rider and who can blame them?  They make for a marvelous performance, especially when the music leaves a bit to be desired because while I do appreciate their “house-pop” style, my thoughts are “less Pop, more House” (and I mean a lot more House!).  However when it comes to lasers and dancing in ’em, singing in ’em and generally being cute in ’em- they nailed it.

A PURR-FECTLY SPARKLING VIDEO DAY!

There’s only one word for today’s sparkle video and that’s MEOW!  Maybe my love for cats has me completely biased, but there’s no denying Arabesque’s dazzling feline power is taking full charge of the stage in sparkling leopard print outfits and supremely styled disco hair.   They’ve also added the only choice in accessories for this number: superhero belts and strappy metallic heels, which gives them the “purr”fect sultry edge for their prowl-like dancing as they sing “We’re the kitty cats, kitty cats, kitty cats… Don’t try to hide cause we can see by night”.  Truly the most adorable words ever sung by three sex kittens lit gloriously by star filters!

SPRECHEN SIE SPARKLE VIDEO DAY?

I chose today’s Sparkle Video because I’ve been taking German lessons and well, sadly, I still don’t understand a word they’re singing.  However, any time you get a couple of people to dress like angels with devil horns in skimpy bedazzled outfits and punk rock hair- I’m in.  The quasi-disco track and bouncing balloons just add more to the fun and though I have no idea what’s going on…I like it!

WALK IN TO SPARKLE VIDEO DAY!

Today’s Sparkle Video begins with a fabulous bracelet entrance by the lovely Taffy who smartly points out her dazzling gems right away and then KABLAM!  She follows it up with a whole body of pizzazz starting from her geometric pompadour styled hair and goes all the way down her slinky sequined tigress dress which is accented by a glittering celestial applique that twinkles magically from glorious star filters.  Also, at the bottom of the screen it says she’s an Aquarius which means her birthday is somewhere around now and what a coincidence!  It’s also Dave Danger’s birthday this weekend and to whom this video is dedicated.  Happy Birthday Soldiers!

TRIPPIN’ ON SPARKLE VIDEO DAY

Today’s Sparkle Video had me from the moment the boot shaped mirror ball hit me with a dazzling sparkle onslaught.  I love that People Under The Stairs chose to style “Trippin’ At The Disco” after our beloved vintage music shows and they definitely hit upon the most important elements.  Flashing lights, smoke machine and star filters are all included here and there’s even some old school rolling video effects for just the right touch of camp.  It’s obvious the boys are feeling the fabulosity of the era and even though they’re having a laugh overall, what’s no joke is their silky rap stylings layed over a classic disco beat.

On a more serious note, I know I touched upon this topic last week, but pay special attention to Thes One’s lyrics about seeing a hipster at the disco who is too cool to have fun.  “With his can’t dance pants and a can’t dance beard” and that he may have grown up in a “can’t dance house with a can’t dance mom”.   A “Can’t Dance Mom”?   Soldiers, if you are going to take on the responsibility of raising another human being that the rest of us have to deal with, bring your children up to value what’s important.  First and foremost: when you are on a dance floor…DANCE!
