I’M A SUCKER FOR SPARKLE VIDEO DAY!

Whenever a song starts out with, “Alright you freaks..”, you know it’s going to be extra good just like today’s Sparkle Video.  Don Cornelius (RIP) is showcasing a full-on outfit war on the Soul Train stage and to be honest, I’m not sure who the winner is.  Now normally, I always “go sequin” as did the legendary Teena Marie (RIP) in an exciting magenta sequin dazzler which she smartly paired with a turquoise sequin tube top and matching boots.  However, she’s standing next to the one and only Rick James (RIP) who’s wearing a very “Bootsy-esque” suit with extreme bell cuffs, accented with rhinestones and fabulously topped off with jeweled encrusted glasses and glitter dusted hair.  This makes for quite a conundrum so instead, let’s call it a glittering tie because when it comes to sparkling, everyone’s a winner!

Sparkle Jacket Stealing: NOT APPROVED!

Soldiers, I never ever thought I would have to write a post of this nature, but we can all thank the douchebag in Hamburg who stole our good friend (and high ranking Sparkle Soldier) Snax‘s favorite jacket.  This glittering white number has always been his first choice for a night on the town and especially for live performances when sparkle factor is of the utmost importance.  These photos are from the “Join the Sparkle Army” party back in August 2009, where Snax is looking resplendent in his magical jacket.  As you can see, it’s quite unique and so I feel comfortable saying that if you see someone wearing it, then they are indeed: THE THIEF.

How sad is that?  Someone who has no creativity of their own, no drive to pull together a truly individual and personalized sparkle outfit.  Someone who thinks that stealing sparkle from someone else will make them sparkle, but that’s not how it works, silly Mr. or Ms. Douchebag!  Something that people like you will never understand is that sparkle.. REAL SPARKLE.. comes from within and no matter how many sequins, glitter or swarovski crystals you glue to body, you will never sparkle.

Soldiers, we must all band together and keep our eyes open to help bring Snax‘s beloved white sparkle jacket back to him safe and sound.  Most importantly, you must take a photo of the person (a.k.a THE THIEF) you catch wearing it so it can be uploaded for all to see and so they can be banished from all Sparkle Army events for eternity because stealing someone else’s sparkle outfits, parts of sparkle outfits, jackets, shoes or space cuffs (get some!) is NOT APPROVED!

“YOU CAN’T WIN LIKE THAT! Anyway, the joke’s on you…’cuz you can take the look, but you can’t take the funk. Snax moves  forward, while you’re just frontin’.” – Snax

SPARKLE VIDEO DAY FEVER!

Today’s Sparkle Video is proof positive that at one time, fabulous taste was everywhere.  “Fiebre” (Fever) was a Mexican TV show in the 70’s that was a glorious 2 hour dance contest which also featured disco fashion extreme, thumping music galore and the only decor ever needed, at all, period.   There are so many glittering sequins and yards of shimmering fabric that it’s absolutely blinding and though it’s difficult to pick a favorite outfit, mine is the green sequin catsuit that’s owning the light-up dancefloor.  Soldiers, when I rule the world this is how everything will look all the time- a dazzling feast for the eyes and ears to behold.  Coincidentally, that’s also the idea behind the Sparkle Army parties and watching this makes me want to have one right now!

The MOTHERLOAD

The word for today is “motherload” because that’s exactly what today’s Sparkle Video is.  “Dancing Queen” features the ladies of ABBA in the outfits: slinky sequin catsuits with matching neckties(?) and boots.  Their disco ball-esque set is so effective at drawing you in to the mood as swirling dancers move all around them like a dream.  At approximately 2:56, the “light-up dance floor” on the stage kicks in for a dazzling grand finale and then to top it off..it’s a karaoke video!  All this is just too much Soldiers, and when I say “too much” I mean perfect.  The motherload.

THE ART OF SPARKLE VIDEO DAY

I’m sorry to bring it up again, but today’s Sparkle Video has me longing for the days when men dressed for the art of seductionTom Jones has enjoyed a long career as a sex symbol and it’s not due to some form of wizardry or amazing talent.  He owes it all to his swagger, confidence and well chosen outfits that allowed his millions of lust-filled fans to visualize him naked.  In fact, I’m willing to bet that no one ever asked “How’s it hangin’ Tom?”, because he always made it quite clear and that’s exactly the kind of men we need today.  No more shirts buttoned all the way up, no more knit hats and beards that hide “come hither” facial expressions and certainly no more of this attitude that the company of a lovely sequined lady is something that comes with no effort whatsoever.  Which brings me to the other bet I’m willing to make and that’s after this show, Tom was back in his dressing room in a sparkling huddle with all of his gorgeous dancers and their equally fabulous hair-  and I’m pretty sure I’d win.

A PURR-FECTLY SPARKLING VIDEO DAY!

There’s only one word for today’s sparkle video and that’s MEOW!  Maybe my love for cats has me completely biased, but there’s no denying Arabesque’s dazzling feline power is taking full charge of the stage in sparkling leopard print outfits and supremely styled disco hair.   They’ve also added the only choice in accessories for this number: superhero belts and strappy metallic heels, which gives them the “purr”fect sultry edge for their prowl-like dancing as they sing “We’re the kitty cats, kitty cats, kitty cats… Don’t try to hide cause we can see by night”.  Truly the most adorable words ever sung by three sex kittens lit gloriously by star filters!

Halston

HALSTON 1932-1990

Halston was one of the most influential American designers of all time.  While many people tend to associate him with dazzling on the dance floor and all night Studio 54 decadence- his contributions to the fashion world are his true his legacy.

Roy Halston Frowick was born in 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa and from a very young age showed an interest in sewing and designing.  He became a milliner after graduating from art school in Chicago and then eventually moved to New York city to work for Lilly Dache´, one of the most well known hat designers in the industry.  Once he became established in the “Big Apple”, he went to Bergdorf Goodman where he made glorious head pieces in their custom salon.  It was there that he first became a household name after making the famous pillbox hat worn by Jackie Kennedy to the President’s inauguration in 1961.

Eventually, Halston moved into women’s wear and opened his own townhouse studio and by the 70’s, his simple but elegant and disco-tastic silhouettes defined the look of the era.  Asymmetrical shoulders, halter top gowns and bias cut flowing caftans, capes and sleeves- many of them sparkling madly with sequins– were all creations of his genius.  Ironically, his designs were often referred to as minimalist, but there was nothing minimal about Halston.  He used only the best fabrics like cashmere, hammered satin and yards and yards of silk chiffon, and his dresses were known for their amazingly flattering fits.  To this day his shirt dress made from Ultrasuede is still one of the highest selling in history.  He was immortalized in Sister Sledge’s “He’s The Greatest Dancer” because he dressed (and hung out with) the most famous and the most fabulous.  Liza Minelli, Bianca Jagger, Lauren Hutton, Liz Taylor and Marisa Berenson all wore “Halstons” as did the crème of high society and the jet set crowd.  Special note: it was Halston’s idea to have Bianca’s legendary birthday party at Studio 54 and that’s because he was fabulous himself!  He had movie-star looks and was always smartly dressed in his trademark black turtleneck, dark glasses and cigarette in hand.  He lived a luxurious lifestyle, partied unapologetically and traveled stylishly with his entourage of models who came to be known as “The Halstonettes”.  When they were all photographed as a group, they made the most iconic images in fashion history – not to mention their sparklingly memorable cameo appearance on the Love Boat.

Disco fabulosity aside, Halston was a true pioneer accomplishing many “firsts”.  He brought American sensibility to the forefront of the fashion world both garnering respect and stealing the limelight from Europe.  He was influential in uniform design which he created for various entities including the American Olympic team, Braniff Airlines and even came close to designing for the NYC Police Dept* (can you imagine New York’s finest patrolling the streets in Halston? Fabulous!).  He was also the first high-end designer to enter into major licensing deals as well as to be contracted to design for a chain store, JC Penney.  While the latter ventures became overwhelming and caused problems for him in the end, the fact that he took such risks was groundbreaking.  You see Soldiers, we’re used to partnerships like “Karl Lagerfeld for H&M” and “Missoni for Target”,  but back then it was unheard of.

Halston passed away in 1990, and while the last years of his life and career were mixed with some downfalls, it doesn’t take away from who he was and what he gave us.  Like it’s says on his plaque in the Fashion Walk of Fame, “The 70’s belonged to Halston” and he came to symbolize the era.  He worked hard, played harder and made a lot of fabulous entrances.  He lived the life we aspire to by surrounding himself with extreme beauty, good friends and great parties.  However, more than all of that he gave us  “The Look of Disco” and for that, he is forever a Sparkle Army Hero.

(* Interview footage form  “Ultrasuede: In Search of Halston” & NY Times blog accounts are that he pitched the designs but they were never approved, contrary to many online posts.)

WALK IN TO SPARKLE VIDEO DAY!

Today’s Sparkle Video begins with a fabulous bracelet entrance by the lovely Taffy who smartly points out her dazzling gems right away and then KABLAM!  She follows it up with a whole body of pizzazz starting from her geometric pompadour styled hair and goes all the way down her slinky sequined tigress dress which is accented by a glittering celestial applique that twinkles magically from glorious star filters.  Also, at the bottom of the screen it says she’s an Aquarius which means her birthday is somewhere around now and what a coincidence!  It’s also Dave Danger’s birthday this weekend and to whom this video is dedicated.  Happy Birthday Soldiers!

IT’S SUNNY on SPARKLE VIDEO DAY!

ATTENTION SOLDIERS:  This is an update to the original post from this morning.  I have been informed that once again, today’s video is not viewable in Germany- and who knows where else.  Thanks a bunch youtube.  I have also added a clip of the same song from the much better and cooler vimeo.  It’s a different version, without the fancy party in the background, but you still get the vibe.  It’s placed at the end so scroll down to view. Peace and Sparkles!

Today’s Sparkle Video, the last one of the year, is from our beloved Boney M because there’s no better way to start the holiday weekend!  Here they perform the joyful and uplifting “Sunny” in all its disco glory for a room full of revelers in formal attire which makes me long for the days when wearing gowns to a party was the norm.  Just looking at all the dandies in tuxes and ladies in flowing floor length dresses already puts me in a sparkling mood, but then it’s kicked up a few glittering notches by the words in the song.  “The dark days are gone and the bright days are here” is something we can all relate to as we ditch “used and abused 2011” and welcome in “shiny and new 2012” which, according to my sources, is going to be ultra-sparkling!

SUPER SPARKLE VIDEO DAY!

Today’s Sparkle Video is like an episode of “Lost in Space” gone fabulously right.  Our beloved “Supernature” gets reworked by the boys of Erasure who’ve turned that stage into a dreamy planet of colorful flashing lights and disco smoke where everyone wears spandex spacesuits accented with dazzling sequins.  All of this yumminess is dramatized by their slow motion movements, strobe light pods and monsterous eyeball plants hovering about like they’re going to eat them all at any second. Oh l’amour!
