Today’s Sparkle Video features a breathtakingly beautiful Grace Jones on a Montreal TV show from 1977 and is the perfect way to start this rainy day in New York City. A smooth disco groove like this one and our Miss Jones in a slinky magenta metallic dress accessorized with space cuffs (get some!) is the perfect “pick me up” and all I need (along with a delicious cup o’ joe!) to get me up and on my way. The flashing lights and crowded dance floor are an added bonus of fabulous and all of it together makes the best breakfast ever!
P.S. Dear Soldiers: I must say “Sorry” as I have been unable to devote myself to writing as much as I’d like to due to current circumstances, but very soon I’ll be back to blogging about all of your- and my- favorite things so stay tuned…
Today’s Sparkle Video is a fine example of what the television experience should be like. Tilt was an Italian show from the late 70′s whose entire concept was based on the most obvious choice: the “discoteque”. Yes Soldiers, there was a time when producers were cool and created shows based on what people really want which is flashing lights, thumping music and lots and lots of sparkle outfits. But I digress – so back to this clip featuring disco sensation Belle Epoque making a guest appearance on the show, sparkling madly in dancing-school-fabulous attire while surrounded by party people blessed with the fever to “Jump Down” while they get down. Perfection!
I adore the stunning Madleen Kane, and once I laid eyes on this TV appearance from the early 80′s, I knew it was destined to be today’s Sparkle Video. “You Can” is not my favorite MK song, as I prefer her more disco-tastic numbers, but this clip is all about the visuals. It begins with the super-hot and glittering team of Solid Gold Dancers slinking across the stage and then it’s not long after that - KABLAM! Madleen appears in a showstopping sequin multi-sparkle outfit that has me gagging with so much jealousy, I can hardly function enough to type this. But don’t be alarmed Soldiers, because that’s the method I always use when deciding what I really need and I REALLY NEED THAT OUTFIT! (Note to self: Call personal sparkle outfit maker ASAP)
In a magical example of how rock n’ roll dazzles just as much as disco, today’s Sparkle Video is a clip of the legendary Sparks‘ appearance on Saturday Night Live from 1982. Not your average rock band, the Sparks have always been a “bit different” as they say, in musical. lyrical and vocal stylings as well as in unorthodox fashion choices and they made it work people! Here we have a stage full of men dressed in sparking sequin suits, featuring brothers Russell in a glittering lime green number and “odd-man-out” Ron, who preferred to stick with his famous 40′s Dandy look. They’re a sight for sore eyes and ears as they take hold of the audience, break dance a little bit (kind of) and sing madly about another legendary American duo, Mickey Mouse and his bride Minnie.
It’s finally Halloween- the absolute best holiday of the year and people have been dressing up and partying for days here in NYC and tonight should be even more spectacular! Not only will all of the sparkling revelers be out on the town, but ghosts and goblins will also be dancing in the streets and if they’re feeling cheeky enough, give us a dazzling fright or two. To help get everyone in just the right spirit ( a bit of blood sprinkled with lots of camp! ), is this trailer for the film, The Disco Exorcist. I truly never stop being amazed at how adding the word “disco” to anything just makes it so much better and using disco balls as “weapon of death” is something I’ve definitely not encountered before. Soldiers, I believe in all my heart that discos should always be a happy place where everyone is welcome to get down on the dance floor under disco balls and laser beams, without fear of a possessed person making their heads explode. However, I do find this premise quite entertaining, especially on All Hallows Eve.
WARNING SOLDIERS: this clip is labeled NSFW and it is! Please watch at your own discretion!
Today’s Sparkle Video is one of my all-time favorite songs and this clip of Raw Silk performing in the height of 80′s disco fashion is truly a rare sparkling diamond! I also chose this because we are fast approaching the most fabulous holiday of the year when everyone casts aside their inhibitions (those who have some anyway) and dazzles from head to toe with reckless abandon. However, to be honest, I can’t be sure this was a Top of The Pops Halloween special, or “fancy-dress party as the Brits like to call it, because it was 1982 and seeing a dance floor filled with supercharged freak-a-zoids was normal back then. Longing for a time machine anyone?
Today’s Sparkle Video is a gem beyond sparkling gems, featuring the gorgeous Asha Puthli who’s making an appearance on Stryx (that other-worldly, space-tastic Italian television show from the 70′s). She’s a magical vision to behold as she slinks into view wearing head-to-toe metallic gold. Making it even more fabulous is the sultry disco beat of “Mister Moonlight” which dramatizes her flowing wings adorned by glorious space cuffs. Yes Soldiers, what you are seeing is bonafide LeGaspi couture complete with his trademark trapunto quilting! The combination of her flawless beauty and his dazzling outfit design makes this video so dazzling, it’s- as they say- “everything“.
Marc Almond is a my hero in more ways than one. First- he’s got the voice of an angel from heaven, Second- a never ending closet of glittering sparkle outfits and now he proves once again why he’s the “King of Fabulous.” In today’s Sparkle Video, “Glorious”, he’s saying, “Bite me, Aging. I’ll just bedazzle my whole face” And it works Soldiers. It works! What better way to take hold of the inevitable than to cover it with Swarovskis? I really don’t care how old Marc Almond gets, because he’s forever beautiful to me. However, RESPECT for sharing this dazzling new tactic.
Today’s Sparkle Video takes “dancing-school-fabulous” to the ultimate level. Here we have the sultry Legs & Co., of Top of The Pops fame, showing off my favorite look while moving and grooving to Chic‘s classic, “Dance, Dance, Dance”. I love these costumes because not only do they make use of the glorious mutli-sparkle sequin effect, but each one has their own color-way, just like the Osmonds ( if they were girls! ). Plus, the added bonus of flouncy feather tails mimicking Vegas showgirls truly brings their dazzle to the most glittering heights of fabulous! There aren’t not too many jobs that I’d trade being Da General for Soldiers, but this is definitely one of them.
There’s no better way to celebrate the reformation of the Army of Lovers than by making them today’s Sparkle Video. This clip is especially hypnotic as it’s a remix of the epic “Crucified” with dazzling Sound Factory Flava”. I’m into it Soldiers! They look just as fabulous as ever, especially Jeane-Pierre and his flowing locks – but it’s always been about him anyway, hasn’t it? They’ve made some appearances in 2013 and I truly hope they are planning a world tour soon as I would like to meet with them and discuss the idea of joining forces to become the Sparkle Army of Lovers. While their mission may seem slightly different than ours, “fighting hatred and intolerance everywhere until everybody on the planet can have sex with everybody else all of the time”, it’s really not. If you add “sparkling from head to toe while dancing under disco balls and laser beams”, it would be one glitteringly huge show-stopping force.
